Catering students rise to the challenge

Barnsley College Catering and Hospitality students enjoyed a day of bread making with industry expert Christopher H.J North.

As the author of ‘A Taste of History’, a comprehensive French bread cookbook, Christopher held a book signing as well as hosting a range of bakery demonstrations.

The students took the opportunity to learn about varieties of bread and how the product became a staple food popular around the world. The highlight of the day came when students had the chance to taste their creations.

Retired bakery lecturer Christopher said: “The bakery lesson I held for the students was wonderful. The catering industry is fast moving and has a very competitive job market, therefore it is important as professionals we share our knowledge with the next generation.”

Martyn Hollingsworth, Catering and Hospitality course leader at the College, added: “To have Christopher come to College and share his experience with our students is a real honour. It’s brilliant to see professionals genuinely interested in inspiring the next generation of catering and hospitality employees.”
