TEF Silver for Swindon College

Swindon College is delighted to announce the award of a Silver rating following a TEF (Teaching Excellent Framework) assessment and has been praised for the work which is being carried out enabling higher education students to achieve excellent outcomes.

The TEF was introduced by the Government, managed by the Office of Students, to build evidence about the performance of the UK’s higher education sector, complementing the existing Research Excellence Framework with an analysis of teaching and learning outcomes.

Students invest significant amounts of time and money in higher education, and should expect a high quality academic experience. The TEF measures and monitors those areas which students really care about: teaching, learning and student outcomes and assesses the delivery of these areas over the last 3 years.

As well as helping prospective students to choose where to study, the TEF encourages universities and colleges to work with their students to develop an even better student experience and to continue to develop and monitor. Receiving the TEF assessment Silver award demonstrates that the College is seen as a high quality higher education provider.

The College was found to have a teaching model that takes account of employer requirements and student commitments and ensures all learners are significantly challenged and stretched.  The assessment recognised that personalised academic mentoring contribute to the high levels of continuation of both full and part time students at the college.  This level of support as well as a dedicated higher education study space and high quality specialist facilities are available to students to enhance their learning and secure high levels of engagement supporting their commitment to study. The summary of findings also highlighted staff engagement in relevant industries leading to currency in the curriculum and the involvement of some students in developments that are at the forefront of professional practice.

Vice Principal Quality, Lynne Plested said: “We are delighted to have achieved this award following the assessment.  The student experience and the outcomes are at the heart of everything we do at the college and are always central to all of the decisions we make.  This award confirms that the work of teaching staff and students is of high quality and that we meet and exceed the TEF and national measures.  We will continue to develop our teaching quality and develop a programme of excellence to further enhance the experience of our students”.
