X Marks the Spot for Even More Industry Standard Facilities Coming to College Campus

An ‘X marks the spot’ ceremony has taken place at Stoke on Trent College’s Burslem campus, to highlight the location for a brand-new teaching and learning facility which will enhance student learning experiences.

The new build development at Burslem will feature a new two and three storey building which will connect to the existing A Block building. This new hub will feature additional classrooms, science labs and prep room that will extend the already established A block and will be accessed from the existing main entrance.  The second floor of the new building will also house a large board room and training space.

Key college stakeholders Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Port Vale FC were all present, along with project partners Arcadis and Krol-Corlett Construction.

Stoke on Trent College is investing in future-proofing our campuses, giving our learners enhanced spaces to study in.

“We have seen significant growth in our student numbers year-on-year, and the new building at Burslem plus the Connect building at our Cauldon Campus, which is well underway will provide learners with industry standard facilities and inspiring teaching and learning spaces.

“The new build at Burslem is set to be completed in Summer 2025, ready for students who will be enrolling for the 2025/26 academic year.”

The Burslem capital programme is one of two projects that are being funded through £13 million from the Government’s funding for Further Education’s Capital Transformation Projects.

The other transformation project is the Connect building at the Cauldon campus, which had a ground-breaking ceremony in July, and is set to be completed in June 2025.

Both projects will help create an environment to reinforce the College’s mission to provide an inclusive professional and technical education to energise and support the growth of the city region in key sector areas such as Construction, Health and Social Care, Engineering and STEM and Creative and Digital.

Skills Ready Future Ready – a ‘One Year One Event’ to Mark the Successful Review of Stoke on Trent College’s Corporate Strategy

Stoke on Trent College has held a special event with key partners, students and city leaders to mark the one-year review of their corporate strategy, Skills Ready, Future Ready.

 

‘Skills Ready, Future Ready – One Year On’ brought together a range of stakeholders, students and city leaders from across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire who work in collaboration with the College. The event celebrated an array of achievements, growth and success at the College since the strategy ‘Skills Ready Future Ready’ launched last October.

 

Taking place in the College’s prestigious AA Rosette Hammersley partnership restaurant, attendees were welcomed by CEO & Principal Lisa Capper MBE, who highlighted a number of achievements, including the year-on-year growth and achievement of students aged 16-18, growth in adult and apprenticeships delivery, and the impact of key family and adult learning campaigns such as the Stoke By Numbers numeracy campaign. It also celebrated the growing number of employers and businesses who are Skills Pledge Partners and who work closely with the College across the four priority Skills Hubs of Construction and Green Technologies, STEM & Engineering, Digital & Creative and Health and Social Care.

 

As part of the event, Tom Peacock, a former Level 3 Construction learner at the college spoke about his journey at the College and his successful achievement to secure a Degree Apprenticeship with Thorp Precast, a national specialist construction firm. 

 

Stoke-on-Trent 3 new MP’s Allison Gardner, David Williams and Gareth Snell shared video messages in support of the College and the impact it is making in the local area on young people, jobs and skills needed for the future.

 

Guests were also given a glimpse into the future of Stoke on Trent College, including the new ‘Connect Building’ at the Cauldon Campus which is currently under construction and the new Health Ward and Laboratory that will outturn around 600 young and adult learners with skills in health and social care ready to join the NHE and community workforce.  These projects including a new media and broadcast unit were funded through the government’s Department for Education’s Further Education Capital Transformation, T Level Capital and the Strategic Development funding schemes.

 

The College also celebrated £2.3m for a new advanced Green Skills Hub that will adjoin the Advanced Construction Centre launched earlier this year with the Construction Industry Training Body Chair Peter Lauener. This funding is from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in partnership with Stoke on Trent City Council. Tomorrow it will launch ‘spades in the ground’ for its new state of the art teaching building at its Burslem campus worth £8.1m.

 

Key achievements include:

  • 96% of learners go on to employment, further or higher education or an apprenticeship
  • Almost 9000 learners enrolled at college in the 2023/24 academic year boosting the income by over £5m since 2020
  • Winner national student services award (NAMSS)
  • Apprenticeships have grown 10% within key priority sectors
  • £19.7m secured for two brand new buildings and a capital programme of new industry standard facilities in construction, green skills, health, science and digital media
  • The launch of the college’s new alumni network Made at Stoke on Trent College

Industry Standard Health and Social Care Ward for T Level Delivery Launches at Stoke on Trent College

Stoke on Trent College has launched its brand-new Health & Social Care ward and laboratory, giving students from Level 1 provision through to Level 3 and T-Levels, industry standard facilities to learn for those pursuing a variety of careers in health and social care. It forms part of the Health and Social Care Hub at the college training students to fill the gap in the NHS workforce.

Based at the Cauldon campus, the Health & Social Care ward replicates a clinical setting, giving students and visitors the feel that they are in a real-life environment.

The Health & Social Care ward is part of a £1.5 million investment into its health & social care and broadcast media provisions to support new T-Level courses which have started this academic year and forms part of a much wider capital programme which sees investment of over £19 million across both campuses to future proof teaching and learning spaces.

Part of this investment includes brand new equipment, including VR headsets plus the option to observe real-world care scenarios virtually. The ward also features three life-like dummies who will be used for real procedures including taking bloods, monitoring heart rate, fitting catheters and even in one case, partially showcasing the stages of giving birth. The dolls can also speak via an interactive tablet which allows them to tell students the issue, so they are able to deal with them as they would a live patient.

“The NHS workforce plan shows that vacancies will rise exponentially if nothing is done to train new and existing staff for clinical settings and settings outside of the NHS. This new ward and our new T Level programmes will produce around 600 professionals a year who are Skills Ready Future Ready, embracing digital and AI technologies, for a range of settings including critical services such as midwifery and adult nursing.

“Working closely with our partners at the University Hospital of North Midlands, University of Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, we are looking to create the health and social care workforces of tomorrow, whatever area learners want to go into.

James Donaldson Appointed as Vice Principal, Learner Experience and Inclusion at Gower College Swansea

Gower College Swansea is delighted to announce the appointment of James Donaldson as the new Vice Principal for Learner Experience and Inclusion.

James, who joined the College earlier this month, brings over 12 years of senior leadership experience in student support, learner experience, safeguarding and supporting learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) to make a successful transition from school to College. He also has a strong track record in driving change and improving student outcomes.

In his new role, James will oversee the learner experience, inclusion, and strategic initiatives to enhance student engagement and support services across the College.

Prior to joining Gower College Swansea, James occupied the role of Dean and Assistant Principal at Cardiff and Vale College, where he led several initiatives, including the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Pathfinder, a fully bilingual digital access portal for parents and professionals to support learners with additional learning needs.

He also led the creation of a new Student Union and the introduction of various projects such as a Student Experience Bot to enhance student engagement and wellbeing.

James’ contributions to the education sector have earned him numerous accolades, including the TES FE Award for Outstanding Support for Learners, the NASEN Award for Best Post-16 ALN Provsion in the UK, and the NAMSS Leader of the Year award. His leadership in safeguarding and student experience has consistently been rated outstanding in inspections.

Delighted to be part of the College community, James said: “I am excited to join Gower College Swansea and look forward to working with the incredible team here to continue supporting learners on their journey and ensuring inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.”

Top 100 Honour for Hannah

Gower College Swansea’s Hannah Pearce has been named as one of the CITB’s Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction for 2024.

In her role as Learning Area Manager for Built Environment, Hannah has actively advocated for greater female participation in the construction industries.

Since she joined the College in 2022, the department has made significant advances in educational outreach and industry partnerships. This has led to a 366% increase in female participation in their courses which include plumbing, electrical installation, plastering, and bricklaying.

Hannah has also worked to expand apprenticeship opportunities, collaborating with over 159 organisations to provide real-world experience for students.

An accomplished leader in the construction and education sectors, with a strong focus on sustainability, technology, and female empowerment, Hannah began her career as a civil engineer at Lang O’Rourke, working on projects such as the Vauxhall Tower and the Oxford Brookes University Abercrombie building. Here, Hannah’s work not only highlighted her engineering expertise but also her commitment to integrating educational experiences into construction projects.

During her career Hannah contracted meningitis which led her to found Big Bang UK, developing STEM enrichment programs for primary schools where she continued her advocacy for female participation in construction.

Her efforts have earned her major recognition, from a Wales Children’s Activity and Service Award in 2020 to being named a finalist for a Chwarae Teg Woman in STEM Award the same year.

Hannah’s influence extends beyond the classroom too, as she currently serves on several industry boards, including being executive board member of the Swansea Bay Construction Support Group where she continues to shape the future of the construction industry.

“I feel absolutely delighted and honoured to be named in the Top 100 list,” says Hannah. “Throughout my career I’ve always been hugely committed to advancing the role of women in engineering and construction, so it feels amazing to see my name alongside all these other fantastic female role models.

“I hope this recognition shows others, especially those considering joining the industry, that there is a diverse range of roles available in the sector and that there is a place for everyone. I would recommend anyone interested in pursuing a career in construction to take a look at the Go Construct website which is a great resource for employment opportunities.”

Education Partners Clear the Path for Student Progression

University of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent College are joining forces to help more students to upskill and realise their potential.

University and College leaders have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which commits both institutions to work together to support College students on their education journey.

University of Staffordshire Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Jones said: “This enables us to remove barriers to education, raise the aspirations of students of all ages and address skills shortages in our area.”

“We will be working closely with Stoke-on-Trent College to map progression opportunities and ramp up the support available to students who want to take their learning to the next level.”

An example of this is the Staffordshire Nurse Pathway which helps College T-level healthcare students to build confidence by bringing them on to the University campus and giving them hands-on experience of clinical environments.

The College students also receive careers advice and guidance from University staff alongside practical experience at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The initiative aims to help NHS England meet its growth target of an extra 2,500 nurses in the region by 2028. 

Building on the successful pilot, both institutions are committed to providing similar pathways for students undertaking computer games, law and education qualifications.

Principal and CEO of Stoke on Trent College Lisa Capper MBE said: “Our partnership with University of Staffordshire is about being joined up in terms of what courses we deliver and how that dovetails with the Local Skills Improvement Plan.”

Through the partnership, the college and university are committing to work together to co-design and deliver Level 3 courses in areas including Engineering and STEM, Health and Social Care and Digital and Creative Industries to provide talented college students with exciting new progression opportunities.

Other developments include Level 3 microcredentials which aim to support College learners in making informed decisions about Higher Education, Careers and Enterprise. This will help students build on the applied skills that they learn in their time at Stoke on Trent College.

Education Group Launches Mental Health Service TalkCampus to Support Adult Students

With the rise in mental health problems in adults, the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group has taken an important step to enhance its student support services by launching mental health support platform, TalkCampus.

According to Mind, only one in three adults with a common mental health problem are currently getting treatment in the form of talking therapies, medication or both.

To support its students across its three Colleges, the Group has launched TalkCampus, an online and global community of students who support each other through their daily struggles, all within a clinically safeguarded environment.

Sam Wright, Principal and Chief Executive at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, said: “At the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, we want to create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for our learners. The launch of TalkCampus will enhance our current student mental health and wellbeing services, providing a platform where our students can express themselves in their own language and within their own time. What’s so great about the platform is that our students can access it 24/7, and it’s moderated by trained peer supporters, meaning it’s a safe and anonymous space where they can talk confidentially and get the support they need.”

As part of the service, the Group has chosen to add peer support which provides instant and ongoing communication, wherever a student may be.

A 2023 survey found that since using TalkCampus, 86% of students find it easier to ask for help when they need it and 79% find it easier to cope with life.

Leigh Allsopp, Strategic Lead for TalkCampus at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, said: “The launch of TalkCampus comes at a pivotal time, as we welcome hundreds of adult learners across the district to start their academic journeys with us. Starting in or re-entering education can be an exciting experience, but it can also be incredibly daunting and TalkCampus provides a safe space where people can share their struggles with those who may be experiencing something similar, reminding them that they’re not alone. This is ideal for our adult learners whose time in College may be limited, or those who carry out their qualifications fully online, ensuring they are supported both personally and academically.”

Learners can also speak to the Group’s Student Wellbeing Officers about any problems they have in or outside of College, as well as accessing pastoral support and counselling services.

Both TalkCampus and the Group’s mental health and wellbeing services can be used by the Group’s wide range of adult learners, from degree-level students to part-time learners and those studying online courses.

Group Puts User Experience at the Forefront with New Website

To continue to deliver an excellent service to its students and stakeholders, the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group has launched a brand-new intuitive website for its three Colleges – creating an engaging and interactive user experience.

Designed to create a responsive and immersive experience for all users, the new website is mobile-friendly, has improved functionality, simplified navigation and enhanced accessibility.

With a greater emphasis on visuals, videos and 360 tours, users can immersive themselves into the state-of-the-art campuses of the Group’s three Colleges, explore its vast range of courses, meet its current and former students and learn more about College life.

All three of the Group’s Colleges – Castleford College, Selby College and Wakefield College – have an area on the new website which been designed with new and prospective students in mind, offering them an easy and engaging way to find a course which suits them, as well as the progression routes and career opportunities available.

Users can simply choose what course they are interested in from the Group’s range of A Levels, T Levels, Vocational Courses, Apprenticeships, Higher Education, Adult Learning and Professional Courses, and apply in one streamlined process.

Alongside the Group’s Marketing Department, the website has been designed by qlue, a creative and website agency which has over 15 years’ experience in developing tailored web solutions for the Further Education sector.

Suzie Doherty, Head of Marketing & Admissions said about the project: “The way in which we interact online is constantly evolving, so it was incredibly important to us that our new websites have a modern and mobile friendly design which creates an immersive experience for our users, whilst being accessible for all. For prospective students, visiting one of our College websites is usually the first interaction they have with us, so we wanted to ensure they could easily navigate across the site to find a course and apply, as well as find all the additional information they may need.”

The Group has coincided the launch of its new website with its brand-new School Leaver Prospectuses for 2025-2026, with its School Liaison Team delivering presentations to Year 11s across the region in the coming months.

Pupils and Teachers at a Village School Wood Like to Thank Coleg Cambria for a Generous Donation

Mike Ward, a Carpentry and Joinery lecturer at Cambria’s Bersham Road site in Wrexham, has spent years designing and building furniture, planters, sheds and more for educators across the area.

This time it was the turn of The Rofft School in Marford, which has a unique outdoor learning environment for the Explorer Nursery and Reception and Resource Provision thanks to the talented tutor and his students.

Mike has created a classroom complete with seating, a gazebo, shelter, a reading den, stage, activity boards for the learning support unit (LSU) and an array of timber facilities welcomed by staff and children.

“These are some of the most recent additions and we also built several items last year, including wigwams, fences and a shed, so this was stage two of the project,” he said.

“It was a pleasure to be able to help as outdoor learning is so important – I’m glad they like it and hope the children enjoy their lessons in this new space.”

Teacher Emma Roberts thanked Mike and the college for their help over the years.

“The children, staff and parents at The Rofft School are delighted with the support we have received from Coleg Cambria in helping us develop our outdoor learning environments,” said Emma.

“They have completely transformed them and literally brought the children’s ideas to life!”

She added: “Without their support we would not have been able to provide the large-scale structures that the children asked for and now use daily.

“We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to tap into the skills of the fantastic tutors and students at Coleg Cambria, we now have a fabulous provision for the children to develop a wide range of literacy, numeracy and topic-based skills.

“We hope to continue the partnership to further enhance the outdoor learning environments across our Progression Step departments, which will also give their learners the opportunity to use the skills they’ve learned in college in a real environment – they have been able to make a huge difference in the community.”

The Rofft School’s next project will be a kitchen garden, and Mike and the team are already busy making planters and coming up with fresh ideas for the space.
