WCG Games Art Students Benchmark Skills Among UK’s Top Talent in WorldSkills Final

Two rising stars from Royal Leamington Spa College, part of WCG, have secured their places in the prestigious WorldSkills UK National Final in 3D Digital Game Art – marking a historic entry success for the Games Art & Design department.

Former Level 3 Games Art & Design students Joshua Cullingford (from Coventry) and Daisy Hashmi (from Warwick), who have both progressed onto the college’s BA (Hons) Games Art degree course, qualified for the national showcase after outperforming competitors in rigorous local and regional heats earlier this year.

In November, they will travel to Wales to represent the college at the multi-day WorldSkills UK National Finals, facing off against top digital talent in a series of rigorous, timed challenges.

The WorldSkills UK competitions are designed by industry experts to evaluate practical skills, technical precision, and time management under live event conditions. In the 3D Digital Game Art category, competitors are tasked with creating game-ready 3D assets from scratch – from initial concept and digital sculpting to texturing and engine optimisation.

Yasmin Manjra, Head of School for Creative Media at Royal Leamington Spa College, commented:

“Reaching the WorldSkills UK National Final is an incredible achievement, and I could not be prouder of Joshua and Daisy. Their success is a true testament to their dedication, creative talent, and the outstanding guidance from their lecturers, Adam and Owen. Securing a spot among the top talent in the country shows the exceptional standard of work coming out of our Games Art & Design department here at Royal Leamington Spa. We are all behind them as they prepare for Cardiff!”

Adam Cox and Owen Edwards, HE Subject Leaders (Games Art) at Royal Leamington Spa College, commented:

“Reaching the national finals is a huge milestone for both students throughout their studies. To see their 3D Games Art skills recognised at this level is amazing, and we’re excited to see how they perform on the national stage.”

Speaking on their qualification, student Joshua Cullingford said:  “I’m very excited about the opportunity the college has provided, and its help and participation in getting me to the final. The previous rounds were a fun challenge that I found myself enjoying. The tutors and work I have done over the years have really helped prepare me for the competition, and I can only thank my tutors for that. They have been very supportive and involved in the competition”

The Creative Media courses at Royal Leamington Spa College continue to develop strong ties with the region’s thriving local video game cluster, equipping students with studio-ready skills in digital sculpting, 3D modelling, and animation.

The WorldSkills UK National Finals take place from 18 – 20 November across college and university venues in South Wales, with the official results announced at a dedicated awards ceremony on the final evening.
